Interesting that the trial is totally left out of this book, and that it says the sign above Jesus said "Our King" instead of "King of the Jews." I liked that it emphasized that crucifixion wasn't a "special" punishment for Jesus - it was a common sentence throughout the Roman Empire "they were going to kill him the way criminals were killed."
I also thought it was important that the Story emphasizes that Jesus was fully capable of ending it all - could you imagine being in such excruciating physical and mental pain and sticking through it?! And even before that he knew what he was going to go through ahead of time and still stuck to the plan! What faith!
I was wondering how this book would handle such a gruesome story. You can't floss over the details on this one...
ReplyDeleteI think it did a great job. It simplified things (like our king and leaving out the trial) and focused on the key point. Jesus choose the cross and he stayed there because of a great love for us. And God turned his back and the world went dark.
Kels - I thought the sign was interesting too! I couldn't imagine going through such horrible pain and knowing that I could stop it at any time. I would definitely want to pull the plug.
ReplyDeleteIt did stick to the key points.. I think it was nicely done for a children's version. I also like how we are coming to this part of the book as Easter is growing near!
It was very fitting to start holy week with the story of the passion. We'll have to figure out what we want to do when we finish....
