David is a shepherd, he is going to be king, God loves him... I feel like this is what we have already learned about David. David is a songwriter. But, comparing psalms to top 40 charts... really?!
David is a murderer?! How do you explain to kids that it is ok to murder and God will still love you? Especially after it just emphasized you should not kill in a previous story.
The psalms have become the basis for lots of the hymns the church still sings. Here's Bono singing psalm 40.

I don't really understand the people that God picks. All of them have tremendous flaws. Why did God like that guy? To me, it underscores grace. That despite the picture of God as an angry God in the Old Testament, he has a lot of patience with these people.
I think it also teaches that God places premium on relationship. What is held in common among all the people that God "chooses" is that they walk with God. They dialog with God. They wrestle with God. They are in relationship with God.
Not a fan of the paraphrase of Psalm 23 - just didn't convey the same feelings/power.
ReplyDeleteI definitely don't understand God's choice in David...multiple wives, concubines, sent a guy to his death to get his wife...definitely not who I would pick to be a role model/king.
Grace and relationship are definitely some big lessons from the last few stories.
Adam actually enjoyed the Top 40 simile lol. Although I feel like Top 40 is even an outdated reference these days!
